Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

As hospital design architects we were delighted to be appointed to deliver the refurbishment of the Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Frimley Park Hospital. Our London architects team acted as Architect, Principal Designer, CDM Advisor and Client Advisor. We worked closely with the NHS Trust and contractor to successfully deliver the project within a live hospital environment. Patient care continued throughout the works.

Beginning at RIBA Stage 3 we developed the technical design through to Building Regulations and construction information then supported the construction phase. Working within the limits of an operational hospital and demanding programme aligned with NHS Trust funding requirements, this high quality project was delivered to programme.

The 181m² refurbishment has transformed the SDEC into a modern, welcoming and efficient clinical environment. It improves both the patient experience and the operational flow of care.

The works comprised the creation of a new ground-floor outpatient unit, refurbishment of the SDEC Gynaecology reception and first floor waiting area. The scheme included new consultant rooms, refurbished patient bays, upgraded toilet facilities, expanded waiting areas and new accessible reception desks. These changes create a more functional, inclusive and patient-focused environment.

The upgrade includes two new consultant rooms. The existing bays have been transformed into dedicated consulting areas to improve patient privacy during diagnostic examinations.

Alongside internal refurbishment, the project incorporated significant upgrades to the building fabric and mechanical services. This includes replacement roof coverings, new ceilings and floor finishes, enhanced fire safety measures, ventilation improvements and installation of a new roof-mounted air handling unit (AHU).

The AHU installation required careful planning due to the complexity of lifting and positioning the unit by crane within the constraints of a live hospital site. In our role as CDM Principal Designer, we led the planning and coordination of this critical operation, ensuring risks were effectively managed and the safety of contractors, hospital staff, patients and the public remained paramount throughout the works.

This project demonstrates JDP’s expertise in delivering complex healthcare refurbishments, combining thoughtful design with robust technical delivery and effective health and safety management to create healthcare environments that support better patient outcomes and improved clinical operations.
