Annexe With Glass Link

Our Shropshire architects are pleased to showcase the successful transformation of a rural property on a curtilage listed site, where sensitive heritage design and contemporary architecture were carefully combined to create a unique and highly functional living environment. The project centred around the conversion of a traditional former cow shed and its integration with the existing house through a beautifully detailed oak-framed glazed link, creating a seamless connection between historic and modern elements.

The new link incorporates a light-filled central garden room that acts as a transitional space between the original dwelling and the converted outbuilding. Designed to maximise natural light and views of the surrounding landscape, the glazed connection respects the character of the existing buildings while introducing a contemporary architectural feature that enhances the overall composition of the site.

The former cow shed has been sympathetically converted into a high-quality one-bedroom annexe, complete with its own kitchen, bathroom, and living accommodation. Throughout the conversion, care was taken to retain the building’s original agricultural character, with exposed beams and traditional features preserved and celebrated within the finished design. The result is a comfortable and self-contained living space that complements the main house while maintaining its own distinct identity.

A key feature of the project is the balance between traditional materials and modern interventions. A series of carefully positioned roof lights bring natural daylight deep into the interior spaces, with the most striking being the large glazed roof light above the front entrance. This dramatic architectural feature creates a sense of arrival, floods the entrance space with daylight, and provides a contemporary focal point within the overall design.

 

External works formed an important part of the scheme, including improvements to the adjacent patio areas to create enhanced outdoor living spaces and strengthen the relationship between the buildings and their rural setting. These landscaping works help unify the development and provide attractive areas for relaxation and entertaining.

The completed project is an excellent example of how curtilage listed building conversions, cow shed renovations, and oak-framed glazed link extensions can successfully combine heritage conservation with modern living requirements. By carefully respecting the site’s historic significance while introducing contemporary design elements, the scheme delivers a distinctive and characterful home that is both practical and visually striking.

 

The project was brought to life through a collaborative approach, with construction works expertly delivered by WCR Construction & Groundwork, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail ensured the successful realisation of the design vision.
