LINAC Replacement Completed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust

Johnson Design Partnership is pleased to announce the successful completion of a specialist healthcare refurbishment project supporting the replacement of a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.

The project involved the refurbishment and preparation of an existing radiotherapy treatment facility to accommodate the installation of a new LINAC machine, ensuring the department remains equipped to deliver high-quality cancer treatment services for years to come.

As medical technology continues to advance, healthcare facilities must evolve to support increasingly sophisticated equipment. The existing LINAC had reached the end of its operational service life, creating the need for a carefully planned replacement programme and associated facility upgrades.

Working within a live NHS hospital environment required detailed planning, stakeholder coordination, and careful management throughout the project. The refurbishment works were designed to prepare the treatment suite for the installation of the new radiotherapy equipment while minimising disruption to surrounding clinical services.

The project has now progressed into the commissioning phase, with the new equipment undergoing the necessary testing and validation procedures before becoming fully operational. Once complete, the upgraded facility will support the delivery of advanced cancer treatment services for patients across London and the wider region.

I worked closely with Johnson Design Partnership (JDP) on a number of complex and sensitive projects…within live acute hospital environments. JDP consistently demonstrated a strong understanding of the requirements inherent in such projects. Their approach combined robust technical capability with a clear appreciation of the constraints associated with delivering refurbishment works within occupied healthcare settings.
