Rich Begins RIBA Conservation Course

Posted Tuesday 06 October, 2026 in News

Today, Rich is starting the RIBA Conservation Course, adding to his existing experience and continuing his professional development at Johnson Design Partnership.

Based in the historic town of Bridgnorth, we’re surrounded by buildings with their own history and character, and many of the projects we work on involve older, traditional or listed buildings. Understanding how these buildings have developed, what makes them significant and how best to approach changes to them is an important part of our work.

For us, conservation isn’t simply about preserving an old building. It’s about understanding what is important about a building and finding appropriate ways to repair, adapt, extend or bring it back into use while respecting its character.

The course will give Rich the opportunity to develop his knowledge further, particularly around the principles and practical considerations involved in working with historic buildings.

For our clients, continuing to develop this knowledge within the practice means we can provide well-informed advice when considering repairs, alterations, extensions or other changes to older and listed buildings.

We’re looking forward to seeing how Rich can bring what he learns back into the office and into the projects we work on across Bridgnorth and beyond.

If you have a project involving a historic or listed building, or simply have an idea you’d like to discuss, please get in touch.

I have now been living for two years in a house designed by Johnson Partnership. Matt Spinks and his team were our main contacts and we were delighted in the way they handled and developed our brief. The test of course is whether the house works as a home in winter and summer. This Johnson design passes the test with flying colours: the house meets all of our requirements for a comfortable, warm, airy and modern home.

Johnson Design Partnership is a forward thinking and progressive Architectural Practice with a track record of successful projects to date. In my experience they always deliver to time scale and within budget and they bring a flair and innovative style that makes them a pleasure to work with I would have no hesitation in recommending them for future projects and particularly those involving difficult or complex Planning issues as they have proved in the past that their careful and considered strategic approaches to their projects and the needs of their clients ultimately ensures positive outcomes.

It had taken eighteen months for us to decide that we would re-locate to the ‘Strettons’. Moving house for us meant also moving an established ceramics and painting studio, we were concerned about finding a property within our budget that would also have the appropriate space.

It was obvious from our early property searches that finding the perfect ‘fit’ was very unlikely, so we took the opportunity to visit an open information weekend run by Johnson Design Partnership. We were immediately encouraged by what we saw and once we had purchased the property, we invited Johnson Design to visit and take a look.

Our original idea was to do a loft conversion as planning permission was already in place, but after a couple of exploratory meetings it became clear that this was unlikely to exploit the position of the property to its best advantage or indeed answer our need for comfortable bespoke studio space. These design conversations helped us focus on the true potential of the property, gradually the idea of a glass link between the original house and separate garage emerged as the way forward.

The final result is overwhelmingly better than we imagined it might be. ‘The Link ‘ has already become a creative centre, providing a light and airy space connecting inside and outside areas from both studio and house; not only is it a functional dining and living area but a truly peaceful and contemplative place to soak up the stunning changes in light of the sky and the landscape which surround us, but also a space to dream and imagine – a painting or ceramic form in the making?

We love this house and it is a testament to your skills that it works so well for us. I am hoping that you will be able to help us again when (if) we succeed in buying the run down (and badly designed) bungalow we want – I will be in touch soon, I hope

Many thanks to Johnson Design for delivering exactly what we wanted: A bright, flexible, modern space which brings the garden and the lovely views of the upper Corvedale into our home, without losing anything of the character and warmth of our historic stone farmhouse. The family home of nearly 30 years has been greatly enhanced, giving a perfect blend of old and new, and the perfect venue for entertaining and family get-togethers. The extension was the proud focus for our wedding celebration and garden party for more than 100 guests over the Bank Holiday weekend, and bought in more admiring comments than we could count!

“We wanted a small extension to the rear of our property, to create an open-plan kitchen dining area. Vic and Matt helped us understand what could be achieved ticking all our wish list and more by also adding a utility and downstairs toilet creating a space we didn’t think was possible. They supported us at every stage of the project through to completion, providing their expertise every step of the way, making the whole process painless. We are really pleased with the result, turning our house into our dream family home.”

“A definite recommend! Matt and his team have worked tirelessly with us on our project over the last 3 years. I think it’s stretched everyone and every aspect of the planning process, matt and his team have been happy to research, find and negotiate tweaks throughout to get planning permission done.”
