Designing for Industrial Clients

Industrial units are fairly commonplace in today’s world, after all, they did spark a revolution in the 1800s. With the ongoing development of industrial facilities, there needs to be a talented architect firms of innovative and creative individuals to undertake such a project. This is where the industrial architects of Johnson Design Partnership come in.

You can’t simply dump an industrial building anywhere you like, even though some greedy investors may try. It’s vital that the surrounding environment isn’t compromised, local wildlife can still flourish, nearby communities don’t become disgruntled, and the entire thing is both sustainable and innovative.

JDP’s industrial building architects are no strangers to all sorts of projects, from residential home renovations and kitchen remodelling, to public and commercial architect projects such as schools. Flexing those creative muscles for an industrial project is nothing they shy away from.

JDP aim to ensure all completed projects are functional, innovative and sustainable. There’s no point having drawing up building plans for a large facility built if it can’t be as efficient as possible, nor if after a few years the whole thing needs to be redone. JDP also see no reason to shy away from innovation, it means they have even more opportunity to showcase their talent and prove themselves as a reputable architect firm

JDP hope to inspire other West Midlands architect firms, whether Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury, or Birmingham-based. Positivity and creativity breeds positivity and creativity, and JDP are more than happy to allow others to take inspiration from their work.

In an age where land space is increasingly shrinking, it’s imperative to JDP when undertaking an industrial building architect that there’s minimal disruption to local residents, meaning they ensure safety measures and protocols are adhered to, but that sticking to their remit of having a creative and innovative spark unique to them.

The site of the project, and how construction teams and their equipment are going to be able to access said site, are key factors for industrial architects to consider. It’s probably for the best that the building doesn’t end up sinking into marshland or tumble off a cliff if built on unstable ground. It’s also important that, once things are up and running, access to the site is smoother than butter and doesn’t have a constant stream of noisy vehicles passing through residential areas.

Not only does access on and off-site need to be easily accessible, there are numerous areas industrial architects need to consider. For example, placement of inbound and outbound delivery areas should be as close to entrances and exits of the site as possible, this mitigating unnecessary travel around the site. This reduces not only vehicle emissions, but also lessens the chance of on-site accidents as staff aren’t in unnecessary areas. Poor Richard was just trying to get from his car to the office, he wasn’t planning on visiting the hospital.

Considerations of Industrial Building Architects

Offices on-site should be placed close enough that they offer members of staff an easy route to other areas of the site, but must also be insulated so that noise doesn’t cause a disruption. It’s also important that offices are equipped with fully functioning IT equipment, to ensure communication between the site and clients all over the world.

Factories should be equipped with equipment that is energy efficient, meaning it’ll be sustainable for many years to come and have less of a damaging effect on the environment. Efficient machines require less maintenance, which can be a hazard if a problem is left unchecked, and staff will feel more comfortable in the knowledge they are in a safe environment. Clear signage, not only in the factory, but site-wide, is also crucial. We can’t have Dave walking from his office straight onto a conveyor belt when all he wanted was a toilet break!

Just because the areas of an industrial facility listed above seemed formally described, that doesn’t mean commercial architects can’t get creative in making each site feel more personal and accommodating. Pictures in communal or break areas, relevant to the surrounding area or community, can remind staff of what’s outside of the four walls around them and give them a sense of belonging. Comfortable furniture or decorations in appropriate areas can also boost staff morale. To feel you’re cared for is to feel you’re more than just a staff ID on a piece of paper.

Despite what appears to be a list of complicated issues listed above, JDP have never been deterred from tackling an industrial project and has several completed projects in this sector under its belt.

It’s these previously completed industrial projects, alongside an ever-expanding list of projects in other sectors, that allow the JDP architect firm to constantly improve upon their skillset and knowledge, meaning they can provide clients with a service that’s not only second to none, but also boosts their confidence in how to understand a client’s needs and those of the wider community.

Innovative Industrial Architects

JDP’s commercial architects try to ensure that no two projects come out as a carbon copy of another, but still ensure all safety measures and appropriate criteria are met. Because of this ethos, JDP’s sees that projects are tailored to the individual needs of a client, whether for West Midlands architect projects or further afield. Furthermore, they still utilise and build upon past knowledge and experience, continuing to be innovative and sustainable. By ensuring each industrial project is tailored to the client’s needs, but is also sustainable, innovative, and built with longevity in mind, both clients and the planet benefit.

Not only are there benefits to the client and planet, but JDP’s ethos means that their aim of forming positive relationships with clients and fostering a positive community spirit is at the forefront of all projects. JDP are aware that industrial facilities are only going to increase in demand, but they also understand that people are ever-conscious of the environment and the impact we have on it. As such, JDP hope to continue building on their positive track record in all sectors, including the industrial one.
