A repeating pattern of windows to the external façade, with the creation of the first of two new voids allows natural light to reach deep into the plan of the building, making a double height space for a brighter learning environment.
A second void on the opposite wall with a new feature staircase was strategically located to improve the flow of the space.
The relocation of the central staircase has created much more useable space on the first floor.
The first floor has been given a two-tier ceiling system to deliver the best possible acoustics, a thoughtful consideration of the impact of sound in a large open space,
Moveable furniture has been used where possible to allow us to keep the space open and flexible.
The choice of white modern ceilings and white painted walls maintains the open and airy feeling, reflecting the natural light. Bringing in colour with the floor finishes helps divide the space without physical barriers.
A meeting room and two study pods are the only enclosed spaces. These have fully glazed screens so they too benefit from the natural light.
Design and material choices for the external works were focused on improving legibility of the area for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
Vertical timber effect battens have rejuvenated the building and provide solar shading.
High quality stainless steel bollards and handrails were introduced.
The attractive and robust material choices of Staffordshire engineering brick for low level walls and landscaping are complimented with soft landscaping including Silver Birch trees and Acers to introduce colour and shade for the future.
