St. John’s (RC) Primary School, Shropshire – Garden Design

At Johnson Design Partnership (JDP), we believe that the outdoor environment plays a critical role in a child’s learning and development. When St. John’s (RC) Primary School in Shropshire approached us to design a new school garden, we set out to create an engaging, natural space that not only served educational purposes but also provided a peaceful retreat within the school grounds.

The design centered around creating a harmonious flow along a processional route, seamlessly connecting protected spaces that would offer both shade and shelter. Incorporating elements such as green pergolas and green roofs, the garden was envisioned as a living extension of the school—enhancing the natural environment while offering students a hands-on opportunity to learn about sustainability and ecology.

Our goal for the project was to transform the school’s outdoor area into a vibrant, interactive space where children could explore, learn, and connect with nature. This garden design exemplifies JDP’s commitment to creating innovative, sustainable school environments that support both education and community engagement.

By prioritizing both functionality and creativity, we developed a multi-purpose outdoor space that encourages learning, reflection, and a deeper connection to the environment—ultimately making the garden an integral part of the St. John’s school experience.
