Children’s CRIC Ward

Johnson Ltd is proud to share the completion of a major ward transformation project for the Children’s Cardio-Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The project involved the full refurbishment and upgrade of a high-dependency hospital ward to meet current HTM and HBN healthcare building regulation standards, delivered in a highly complex, live clinical environment on the 10th floor of the hospital.

The ward’s prominent position within the hospital provides exceptional views across the London skyline, including the River Thames, London Bridge, and the London Eye, creating a calm and uplifting setting for patients, families, and clinical teams. This transformation was delivered in two carefully managed phases to allow the ward to remain operational during winter pressures, before being fully handed over as a dedicated CRIC facility.

The completed space now provides a fully modernised clinical environment designed to support young patients, families, and specialist healthcare teams. Key works included the installation of specialist medical equipment, full ward refurbishment, upgrades to electrical resilience systems, improvements to medical gas infrastructure, enhanced IT and data systems, and the installation of a new nurse call system. Additional patient-focused spaces were also created, including a dedicated children’s playroom and the introduction of a MumPod, providing a private, safe and comfortable lactation and wellbeing space for mothers during what can be an incredibly challenging time for families.

This complex hospital refurbishment project required close collaboration between clinical teams, IT specialists, compliance officers, and construction partners to ensure all works were delivered safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to patient care. Due to the ward’s classification and its location within a high-risk zone on the 10th floor, additional building regulation and compliance measures were implemented throughout delivery to ensure full adherence to healthcare construction standards.

Our Shropshire Architects acted as both Architect and CDM Principal Designer on the scheme, leading the design coordination and ensuring full compliance with healthcare design standards while maintaining a patient-centred approach throughout.

The successful completion of this CRIC ward refurbishment at St Thomas’ Hospital represents a highly meaningful project, delivering a safe, compliant, and future-ready clinical environment that enhances care for children and supports the outstanding work of NHS staff every day.

We had plans done ready to go in case we got funding for my Gp surgery extension/ refurb from NHSE. This came very last minute with stipulations to use it before the end of the financial year. Johnson Design got all the necessary people in place and finalised quotes and palms in a very short timeframe and ensured that all conformed to NHS standards so that all went very smoothly. This involved ensuring that we could work at the site in portacabins.

The patients love our new building and the work thankfully enabled us to function very successfully through Covid.
