Shropshire architects appointed to landmark ‘Passive House’ project

A boutique architect practice in Shropshire has been chosen to deliver a landmark Grand Design project.

Johnson Design Partnership, which is located on Station Lane in Bridgnorth, has been appointed by global property specialists Elemento Group to oversee final designs and project management of a significant ‘Passive House’ in the South East of England.

The concept is a ‘fabric first’ approach to the delivery of a low energy building, where the requirement for space heating and cooling is minimised to an absolute.

JDP beat off international competition to win the contract and now has a team of 3 senior architects evolving the original planning application and design work of Seymour Smith Architects to ensure the construction detailing is stringent and meets the air tightness and thermal bridging required to deliver the expected energy performance.

Once completed, the 5-bedroom home will also showcase a range of stunning design features, including a large cantilever to the front of the building and landscaped gardens with a natural cooling water feature, whilst the property will actually be built into the landscape to reduce visual impact on the surroundings.

“This is a real coup for our practice and shows that small architects with an eye for design and the passion to push the boundaries of innovation can compete and win some of the most exciting projects in the world,” explained Vic Johnson, who founded Johnson Design Partnership in 2003.

“Elemento Group is a visionary developer and bought into how we would complete the challenging final designs and ensure that they are then project managed throughout the construction so that they deliver the energy requirements of a passive house, but also a property that offers the best in luxury living.”

He continued: “Our reputation with ‘Grand Designs’ was definitely a reason why we’ve been selected, with the RIBA recognised transformation of Old Wynd Cottage on a World Heritage Site and other exciting schemes.”

In addition to becoming one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed, it will also be an ideal living space to work and relax.

This has meant that JDP has had to create space for a gym, an office, 5 ensuite bedrooms, staff room, large open plan kitchen/dining space and a balcony overlooking the landscaped grounds.

This latest project marks a strong start to the year for Johnson Design Partnership, with the practice currently working on tens of projects.

As well as creating a stir in ‘Grand Designs’, it is also building a strong reputation for delivering better spaces for some of the UK’s leading healthcare facilities and hospitals.

We had plans done ready to go in case we got funding for my Gp surgery extension/ refurb from NHSE. This came very last minute with stipulations to use it before the end of the financial year. Johnson Design got all the necessary people in place and finalised quotes and palms in a very short timeframe and ensured that all conformed to NHS standards so that all went very smoothly. This involved ensuring that we could work at the site in portacabins.

The patients love our new building and the work thankfully enabled us to function very successfully through Covid.

It had taken eighteen months for us to decide that we would re-locate to the ‘Strettons’. Moving house for us meant also moving an established ceramics and painting studio, we were concerned about finding a property within our budget that would also have the appropriate space.

It was obvious from our early property searches that finding the perfect ‘fit’ was very unlikely, so we took the opportunity to visit an open information weekend run by Johnson Design Partnership. We were immediately encouraged by what we saw and once we had purchased the property, we invited Johnson Design to visit and take a look.

Our original idea was to do a loft conversion as planning permission was already in place, but after a couple of exploratory meetings it became clear that this was unlikely to exploit the position of the property to its best advantage or indeed answer our need for comfortable bespoke studio space. These design conversations helped us focus on the true potential of the property, gradually the idea of a glass link between the original house and separate garage emerged as the way forward.

The final result is overwhelmingly better than we imagined it might be. ‘The Link ‘ has already become a creative centre, providing a light and airy space connecting inside and outside areas from both studio and house; not only is it a functional dining and living area but a truly peaceful and contemplative place to soak up the stunning changes in light of the sky and the landscape which surround us, but also a space to dream and imagine – a painting or ceramic form in the making?
