ARCHITECTS DESIGN TOWN’S FIRST FULLY ACCESSIBLE HOTEL ROOMS
Bridgnorth-based architects Johnson Design Partnership have designed new fully accessible hotel rooms for The Golden Lion – the first in the town to be built specifically for disabled visitors.
The rooms will be part of a new extension at The Golden Lion, which fronts on to Northgate, and building work on the project will begin in the new year.
“The extension will comprise a number of new rooms, the ground floor ones having been designed to be fully accessible for wheelchair users,” explains Johnson Design Partnership managing director Vic Johnson.
“Landlord Jeff Watkins wanted to be able to offer the first hotel rooms in Bridgnorth that have been built to cater for disabled visitors – and this includes the ensuite bathroom facilities.
“In a town like Bridgnorth, which attracts thousands of tourists each year, it’s essential to be able to offer first-class accommodation with easy wheelchair access and it’s great that The Golden Lion have become the first local hotel to do this.
“The extension to the rear of the hotel will be contemporary in style but will be completely sympathetic to surrounding historic buildings and constructed from materials local to the area.
“Johnson Design Partnerhip has been designing fully accessible buildings for a number of years – they are always tremendously satisfying projects to work on.
“We’re delighted that planning permission has been secured for the new hotel extension and very much look forward to seeing the finished building.”
Jeff Watkins added: “I think Bridgnorth is short of good places to stay and these new rooms will enable more visitors to stay and enjoy our delightful town. I am proud to be able to offer fully disabled accessible accommodation in the town centre.”
The Golden Lion pub and hotel is a traditional 17th century coaching inn. It currently offers five ensuite letting rooms, is in the Good Beer Guide and is Cask Marque accredited, serving numerous different real ales.
